Are you ready for Digital TV?

From mid 2013 all television antennas fitted in the Brisbane Metropolitan area (serviced from Mt Cootha transmitters), will require an antenna capable of receiving channels 6 to 28. Most antennas installed from 2002 are designed for both digital and analogue reception.

There are exceptions such as old stock, specific analogue antennas etc. Prior to 2002 antennas were designed to optimize the analogue channels e.g. Ch2, Ch7, Ch9, Ch10, Ch28 (SBS) & Ch31 Briz 31 (no longer transmitting on analogue). The new digital channels are Ch6, Ch7, Ch8, Ch11, Ch12 & Ch28, as you can see these are different channel numbers & require a different antenna. Coax cable also plays an important part in digital reception.

On all new digital installations an RG6 quad shield cable is use. This has four layers of shielding reducing the chance of interference passing through the cable. Earlier coax cable may have either a tri-shield (3 layers) or a duo-shield (2 layers). These cables are usually perfectly acceptable for digital and in some countries are the only types of coax used for reception of digital signals.

Digital signal reception is not all about the strength of signal received (unlike analogue) it’s more about parameters. To receive a perfect, constant digital signal these parameters have to be met. That doesn’t mean to say if you put up an antenna and point it at the transmitter it won’t work, what it means in certain circumstances you will need special equipment to set up the antenna system.
